WHERE TO GET GARDENING SUPPLIES AT THIS TIME OF COVID19

It may be that you want to plant seeds for food, or flowers for supporting the bees and butterflies or you may want to buy already established vegetable plants, soil or gardening equipment. Here is the latest on what is available from garden centres in Cork. This information may change as time goes on, it is not an exhaustive list, we advise ringing the company in question if you wish to order anything. The main thing is that you can keep growing. Everything you need is out there and available it is just a case of accessing it.

Klaus Balz of Hanako horticultural farm in Inchigeela has a good selection of plants, including food and herbs for sale. Look up the site and e mail your order. Because the markets are closed you will be unable to buy directly from Klaus in Macroom or Cork but if you order on line by e mail or over the phone you can collect in Macroom on Tuesdays and in the Coal Quay on Saturdays. All of Klaus’s plants are organic.

Irish Seed Savers grow, conserve and distribute Irish organic vegetables seeds, grains and fruit trees, check out all their varieties on their comprehensive website. They run a very efficient mail order service. Latest advice from Seed Savers twitter account is that they are currently closed but will be open again for ordering seeds on May 1, they had to pause due to the backlog of orders.

Fruit Hill Farm is an online organic farm and garden supplies shop. They sell a big selection of organic vegetable seeds, as well as flower and meadow seeds and seeds for bees. Future Forests is a great place for purchasing plants, shrubs, trees, flowers including bare root. They run a delivery service. This is currently what is up on their website:

They hand raise cottage garden perennials, specialising in bee plants, pollinator attractors, herbs and edibles from their farm in Ballydehob and sell at local markets. They have vegetable plants, everything is organic they run a free home delivery for over €40 if within a reasonable distance from Ballydehob. They were coming to Cork on Wednesdays, this may have changed due to Covid 19, best way to contact them is through facebook.

This garden centre delivers free of charge if you spend €30 and are anywhere up to a 10k radius. They have a good variety of plants, composts, etc and are reported to have very good delivery service. Best way to contact them is via messenger or Facebook.

Hanley’s is a garden centre with all the usual merchandise; soil, composts, fertilisers, seeds, bulbs, plants, shrubs, trees, tools, etc. In terms of growing food they have seeds but not vegetable plants, they do have herbs, fruit bushes, fruit trees. Hanley’s shop is closed but they are open for online deliveries. The deliveries are free of charge if you spend €50 or more. Take a look at the website but ring them or e mail to order what you need as not a lot of their plants, seeds, bulbs, etc is up on the website.

Atkins will deliver if you order online, cost depends on where you are but if you order over €100 it is free. They have a good range usually of vegetable plants ready for planting out, they don’t have all veg plants up on the website so if you are looking for something in particular you are better off ringing them. They have a good selection of bulbs, composts, plants, seeds, growing trays plus an extensive range of tools also.

The Pavilion Garden Centre has a comprehensive website with a lot of seeds itemised in particular, they do a virtual consultation if you are looking for advice. They sell the full range of shrubs, trees, flowers, plants, etc They recommend ringing with your order, you then pay over the phone and they operate a call and collect or will deliver free of charge (depending where you are) for €15 worth of purchases and over.

Hillside Nurseries sell mainly plants, shrubs, hedging, trees, including fruit trees. They have a certain amount of their selection on the website but you really have to call them or preferably e mail them to find out if they have what you are looking for. The shop is obviously closed to the public but they will take orders ideally by e mail or over the phone and you can collect at the gates at the bottom of their entrance in Glounthuane.

Griffins are a well known garden centre with a large selection of plants, trees, shrubs. They have a lot of videos on their facebook page and are very good on planting for bees. They are operating a call and collect service from Monday, April 14. The advice is to e mail what you want and they will get back to you to confirm they have your order. You pre pay, call to them and collect. They have a car park that has been redeployed into bays with sufficient space.
